Move cost estimates

Tool guide

Build a relocation budget before the move becomes real

Moving for work is often described as a salary decision, but the first months can contain a long list of one-time and temporary expenses. Flights, deposits, temporary accommodation, transport, insurance, documents and an emergency buffer can change the amount of cash you need before your first normal pay cycle. Relocation Budget Calculator gives those costs a clear structure so you can work from your own estimates instead of relying on a vague total.

Enter the costs you expect to face. Separate one-time expenses from recurring or first-month expenses where the interface provides that distinction, and include a contingency amount if you want a buffer. The tool adds your categories and shows the total. It does not fetch live flight prices, rent listings or government fees. That is intentional: a static calculator should not create false precision around costs that depend heavily on timing, city and personal circumstances.

Use real quotes where possible

The quality of the result depends on the quality of the numbers you enter. Replace rough estimates with an actual airline quote, accommodation quote, insurance price or official application fee when you have one. If you are comparing cities, duplicate the exercise with the same categories so the difference is visible. Keep notes about what each figure represents and whether it is a one-time payment, refundable deposit or recurring cost.

What the total tells you

The total is a planning baseline, not a promise about what your move will cost. A large deposit may be recoverable later, while a temporary accommodation cost may only apply for a few weeks. The calculator does not decide how much emergency savings you should hold; it simply lets you include a contingency amount in the model you choose.

Where it fits in the HireLanz toolkit

Use the calculator after researching a role and potential visa route but before committing to travel or housing. Visa Route Explorer can help you identify a route to investigate, Visa Document Checklist can organize common evidence, and Salary Comparison or Job Offer Comparison can put the compensation side into context. Together, these tools create a more complete planning workflow without pretending that one calculator can answer every relocation question.

Limitations

Relocation costs vary by destination, season, family size, housing market and employer support. Government fees and visa requirements can also change. Enter current quotes and official figures where available, label uncertain values as estimates, and keep a buffer for unexpected costs. The calculator is a planning aid rather than an official quotation or financial recommendation.

How it works

Enter your estimated one-time and first-month costs. The tool totals them by category in your browser.

Methodology at a glance

All values are user estimates unless a figure is explicitly sourced. The total is a planning aid, not an official quote.

How the model is calculated

The relocation calculator adds the cost categories entered by the user. The model is intentionally additive rather than predictive: it does not fetch prices, estimate future inflation or assume a particular city. Users can enter one-time costs, first-month costs and contingency amounts according to the fields available in the interface. The displayed total is therefore the sum of the modelled categories, not a market quotation. Validation rejects negative values and keeps the result finite. The most important methodological assumption is that the user supplies figures that represent the same currency and time period. Where a cost is uncertain, the user should label it as an estimate and replace it with a quote or official fee when available.

Important notes

Review inputs and assumptions before using a result for a real decision.

Disclaimer

Relocation figures are planning estimates based on your inputs. Verify official fees, housing costs, insurance and employer support separately.

Sources and reference notes

No live price source. Costs are user-entered estimates or figures copied from quotes and official information by the user.
